Stateless - Côte d'Ivoire (2023)

According to UNHCR experts, around 10 million people worldwide are stateless. Côte d'Ivoire has the one of the highest number of stateless people in the world.
This is due to the immigration of workers from neighboring countries such as Burkina Faso and Mali as well as refugees from the Sahel region who are fleeing climate change and terrorism. Many of them don´t have valid documents.
In addition, the Ivorian registration system is difficult to access in many parts of the country. Many Ivorians therefore do not have their births registered. The country is trying to find solutions and has introduced programs to support stateless people.
